Can AI Score High on a Human Intelligence Scale?
Artificial intelligence is everywhere - but how intelligent is it, really? To find out, we at Worldwide IQ Test decided to put ChatGPT IQ to the test. Not just any test, but our official culture-fair IQ test, designed to assess raw reasoning skills without the influence of language, education, or cultural background.
This article explores how different versions of ChatGPT performed, what the test actually measures, and how AI intelligence compares to human intelligence today.
What Is ChatGPT IQ?
ChatGPT IQ refers to the reasoning capabilities of OpenAI's language models when applied to IQ-style challenges. These models, based on deep learning and neural networks, can analyze patterns, interpret text, and generate surprisingly logical answers. While they're primarily built for language processing, their pattern recognition ability allows us to ask an exciting question: how well can AI perform on a human IQ test?
ChatGPT AI is not programmed with fixed answers; instead, it learns from examples and generalizes from them.
Multiple Types of Intelligence - Not Just One IQ
Human intelligence isn’t just about solving puzzles or doing math. According to psychologist Howard Gardner,
there are multiple types of intelligence, including:
Logical-mathematical (problem-solving, abstract reasoning)
Linguistic (verbal and written communication)
Visual-spatial – (understanding shapes and space)
Emotional and social – (relating to others and oneself)
Musical, kinesthetic, naturalistic (creative and physical talents)
A standard IQ test typically measures just a narrow slice of this spectrum - mostly logical and spatial reasoning. That's why we use a culture-fair IQ test to focus on core cognitive abilities that all humans (and now AIs) can attempt equally.
What Is a Culture-Fair IQ Test?
Our culture-fair IQ test is carefully designed to remove all linguistic, educational, and cultural bias.
It uses only black-and-grey abstract images - no text, no numbers, and no color.
This ensures that participants rely purely on fluid intelligence, which includes:
Pattern recognition
Logical thinking
Abstract reasoning
The goal is to assess thinking ability, not learned knowledge.
How We Tested ChatGPT IQ
To fairly test ChatGPT IQ, we showed it each question as a direct screenshot - just like a human test-taker would see it. No additional descriptions or hints were given. The AI had to analyze the raw visual input one image at a time and determine the correct pattern or answer from the multiple - choice options. This approach ensured that ChatGPT IQ faced the same challenge as any human participant, relying purely on abstract reasoning and pattern recognition.
We tested three versions of ChatGPT: GPT-4, GPT-o1, and GPT-4o.
ChatGPT IQ Test Results
Here's how the models performed on our official IQ test:
Model | IQ Score | Time spent |
---|---|---|
ChatGPT-4 | Failed | 5–6 minutes |
ChatGPT-o1 | 82 (time limit exceeded) | 70 minutes |
ChatGPT-4o | 82 | 5 minutes |
ChatGPT IQ was tested with 3 AI models - only 1 passed. Two scored 82, slightly below the average IQ of 100, but one failed due to exceeding the time limit.
In fact, only the ChatGPT-4o language model successfully passed the Worldwide IQ Test culture-fair assessment.
With this result, ChatGPT-4o effectively falls into the "Dullness" IQ score range. While the term may sound a bit striking, it simply indicates slightly below-average performance compared to the human average IQ of 100.
IQ Score | Traditional Ranking System | % of population |
---|---|---|
≥ 140 | Genius level | > 0.4 |
130-139 | Gifted | 2.3 |
120-129 | Very Superior Intelligence | 6.4 |
110-119 | Superior Intelligence | 15 |
90-109 | Average/Normal | 47 |
80-89 | Dullness | 14 |
70-79 | Borderline deficiency | 5.8 |
50-69 | Mild Mental Retardation | 2.2 |
35-49 | Moderate mental retardation | |
20-34 | Severe mental retardation | |
< 20 | Profound mental retardation |
One interesting detail in the results was that GPT-4o performed better on the more difficult questions toward the end of the test, while GPT-o1 did better on the easier questions at the beginning - but struggled as the test progressed and the level of complexity increased.
Still, from a reasoning perspective, the two models performed nearly identically. Notably, GPT-4o matched GPT-o1's score but completed the test in a fraction of the time, demonstrating its ability to process structured logic quickly - even if its abstract reasoning still lags behind that of most humans. Surprised?
How Smart Is ChatGPT IQ Compared to Humans?
While the score might seem modest, it's important to remember that ChatGPT IQ was never designed for visual intelligence testing. Its strength lies in language, data analysis, and summarization - areas where it often outperforms humans.
However, in abstract, non-verbal problem solving - a task central to many IQ tests - it still shows clear limitations. This doesn’t mean it isn't smart. It means it's smart in different ways.
Important Note About the Test Timing
This test was conducted in January 2025. Since AI models evolve rapidly, current versions of ChatGPT may already perform better today. The field is advancing fast, and new capabilities are being added continuously.
Can You Outsmart ChatGPT IQ?
Now that you've seen how ChatGPT performed in terms of IQ, here's the real question: Do you think your reasoning skills are sharper than artificial intelligence?
Do you think you can outscore artificial intelligence in an IQ test? There's only one way to find out - take the test yourself.
